Today I was in a "lunch and learn" meeting where the team was being introduced to a new source control system. What stuck me was when someone asked the question about how to best create the structure that the files would be saved in. The presenter (the most experienced member of the team) never really answered the question.
Why not just say this is how we are going to do it and go down that path and save lots of headaches down the road? Instead everyone, from the most experience to the most junior person now gets to decide how they would like to do it. These same individuals will be complaining about how this project did all wrong and why didn't they do it this other way.
What is lacking, is leadership. People were looking for someone to say this is the best way for our department to do it and everyone would have been fine with it. Or at least we could have had a 15 minute discussion over it and be done with it.
While they are all in the same boat, no one is rowing together and they wonder why they are not getting anywhere.

Here we go
This is going to be my outlet to talk about all things about software development, career development, management styles and practices and just about anything else goes through my mind.
